Business Partner of the Year Award

In November the Leigh UTC in Dartford, which specialises in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, held its second annual awards evening to recognise the exceptional achievements of its students.

The evening is also an opportunity to recognise the support that is provided by the 120 business partners the work with the UTC to provide such fantastic real world learning experience for the student’s. The annual awards are proving to be a popular event on the local calendar, attracting even more attendees from businesses this year. This greater turn out helped to beat 2016’s fundraising efforts with an impressive £20,000 total.

The evening also provided a special surprise for Kenard when Simon Beamish, CEO of Leigh Academies Trust presented Keith Ellis and Kenard as the winner of the first Business Partner of the Year Award. This award was sponsored by Leigh Academies Trust in recognition of the outstanding contribution in supporting The Leigh UTC. Steve Leahey, the Principal of the Leigh UTC said “Kenard has provided unparalleled support for the UTC. Our students complete engineering projects devised by the Kenard team, it has donated raw materials, provided free tooling for some of our machines, taken students on work placements and recently taken two former students as apprentices as they complete their HNC. As well as being the Chair of Governors, Keith is also personally involved in a number of events. All of this makes Kenard the outstanding partner for 2016. I’m very proud to be part of that relationship which started several years ago and now cuts through much of what we do at the college”

This is an exciting time for the college. It finished as the best performing UTC across the country for GCSE progress, it was also the top performing schools in the country for the Technical Baccalaureate, with one student receiving the Outstanding Student Duke of York Gold award. Not content with one school to run, they have just started to build an “Inspiration Academy” feeder school on the grounds opposite. The applications for Year 7 alone reached over 300 for just 120 spaces.

As Keith and Steve explained in the local news, the Leigh UTC and the new Inspiration Academy “ensure that even more students have access to our successful model of education which is allowing students to gain places at selective universities and advanced apprenticeships in areas that our nation’s economy so badly needs”

Thanks to the team at Dartford for producing the fantastic trophies for the students once again!
